THEOBALD WOLFE TONE

Eldest son of a Dublin coach-builder, Tone was well educated,
studying law at Trinity College, Dublin, although he would have preferred a
career in the army.
A member of the privileged Protestant Ascendancy, Tone was strongly
attracted by the radicalism of the American and French revolutionaries,
maintaining close links with the United Irish Society, which he had helped
found in Belfast in October 1791.
Originally reform-oriented, the United Irishmen were by 1794 planning the
overthrow of British rule. Their plans were betrayed by an informer,
resulting in Tone's exile to America in 1795. By 1796 he was in France,
seeking military support for an Irish rising. In Paris, on July 12th, 1796,
Tone met the man who was to prove his strongest ally in this great
adventure, Louis Lazare Hoche.
